Patong Beach

Phuket's principle attractions are its beaches and off-shore islands.

Surin Beach,23 kms.north of town,is large and gently sloping, making it ideal making it especially dangerous during monsoon season. There is a 9-hole golf course at Surin and it is the best place to enjoy Phuket's sunset. Nai Yang or AirportBeach,3kms. past the airport,is well shaded by tall pine trees and is ideal for swimming and relaxation. It offers good snorkeling among sea anemones and fish traps. North of Nai Yang, stretches Mai Khao (white wood) Beach,Phuket's longest. Each year from December to February, giant sea turtles lumber ashore at Mai Khao to lay eggs which are prized delicacies.

At Koh Sireh, there is a sea gypsy village, whose people are called " Chao Lay" or "Sea Tribes". Near the sea gypsy village,up 439-fitness testing, steps,Wat Koh Sireh affords a good view of Phuket town,Laem Nga Bay Saphan Pla (where boats helps create the peaceful atmosphere of the temple.

In the quiet, sheltered waters of Phuket's east coast are half a dozen pearl farms. All but one of these grow 'mabe' or half pearls. You can visit the farms where half pearls are cultivated. South Sea pearls--and that is what they grow on Koh Nakha Noi--can be worth thousands of dollars each.

Two animals are brought face to face. They lower their heads. Ther fight may last minutes or a couple of hours. It ends when one bull gains the ascendancy by pushing the other back, back, back or when one simply turns and takes flight.
From Hadd Yai visitors can travel to Songkhla by  bus, taxi or train.A pleasant excursion in Songkhla area is to Koh Yoh, situated in Songkhla Lake, being connected to the sea,and its waters are brackish. Enroute to Koh Yoh a stop may be made at the Fisheries Station where enormous white Plakapong are bred.Koh Yoh is renowned for its locally woven cotton called "Pha Koh Yoh" and has a number of ancient Buddhist monuments. But the real joy is the tranquility of the idyllic in compari-son to which gentle Songkhla becomes a bustling frenetic metropolis.

Wat Phra Kaeo

The Royal Chapel or Temple of the Emerald Buddha, usually called Wat Phra Kaeo and officially named Sri Ratana Saadaram Temple is the most interesting and famous of Bangkok's temples.Since its foundation in 1785 A.D. it has never been allowed to fall into decay. This collection of chapels, halls, towers, etc., can be divided nto two parts: The Bot or Chapel  of the Emerald Buddha proper, and the small edifices which stand around, viz., three small chamber's on the west, twelve salas, the belfry on the south, and a small chapel in the southeastern corner. The central chapel was erected by King Rama I,according to the usual plan of Thai temples, for the purpose of keeping the famous Emerald Buddha, which is placed upon a magnificent altar. The upper part of this altar, which is as old as the chapel itself,is raised on a base added by King Rama III.On either side is a standing image of the Buddha, and these are said to personify the first two Kings of the present Dynasty.

The buildings on the platform to the north of the Bot include the Library in the northeastern corner and a small chapel in the northwestern corner. The nucleus of this second or northern group of buildings is the Mahamandapa, a square pavilion erected by King Rama I on the site of the ancient Library which was destroyed by fire as soon as it was completed. This pavilion was built for the purpose of keeping the sacred Scriptures should not fail to see in this Library the magnificent bookcase in lacquered teak inlaid with mother-of-pearl,which was made by order of King Rama I and is considered to be the best specimen of this kind of work. The covered gallery which runs round the temple courtyard is interesting on account of the wall paintings which represent epsidoes from the Ramakien (the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana). They were made during the reign of King Rama I,renewed under King Rama III, and again under King Mongkut.Besides the buildings just mentioned, the precincts of Wat Phra Kaeo contain several objects of interest: giants, bronze images of lions, elephants, oxen, and monkeys of good modern workmanship.Eight towers stand in a row on the eastern side of the main temple. The colours of the glazed tiles with which they are covered are different of each tower.
